Ivan Menchall’s comedy about the stages of grief that was adapted into the 90s Comedy Classic by the same name, “The Cemetery Club” is coming to The Biltmore Studio located within The Village Theater at Cherry Hill in Canton, MI April 13 – 15, 2018.
The 90s film featuring a powerhouse trio of women, Ellen Burstyn, Olympia Dukakis, and Diane Ladd who portrayed three Jewish women who have been friends their entire lives seek to comfort and guide each other through the mourning of their dead husbands by meeting once a month for tea and a trip to the cemetery to visit their husband’s graves. Lucille, whose outwardly gregarious behavior belies her inner sadness, epitomizes denial. Doris, with her sharp tongue and quick wit exhibits anger. And acceptance manifests itself through sweet Ida who begins to question during the play whether or not it is perhaps time to move forward with her life. Things get complicated when Sam the butcher, who is also a widower comes on the scene and the women vie for his attention. Audiences will be moved to laugh and cry as they follow these women’s journey through grief.
Jeanne Pruett, President of the organization and also the assistant director says, “This production is a milestone for BTEP. Previously, we limited our productions to lighthearted comedies, but this time we wanted to explore a topic that affects so many people so deeply. We have a marvelously talented cast and we’re expecting this to be an amazing production. We feel certain audiences will be touched by and relate to these women”.
