APRIL 2023 Featured Artists:
Cheryl Dawdy, Linda Shepard, and Marilynn Thomas
APRIL 2023 EXHIBIT
Featured Artist: Cheryl Dawdy, Linda Shepard, and Marilynn Thomas
Exhibition: “Nature’s Eclectic”
Date: March 30 - April 30, 2023
Opening Reception: April 6, 2023, from 6-8 p.m.
The Village Theater at Cherry Hill welcomes the featured works of artists Cheryl Dawdy, Linda Shepard & Marilynn Thomas in a collaborative exhibit, “Nature’s Eclectic”, focusing on a variety of collages using repurposed materials, beautiful landscapes, and paintings of birds in their natural habitat. The exhibit will be on display in The Gallery at Cherry Hill from March 30 through April 30, 2023. An opening art reception will be held on April 6, from 6 – 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Cheryl Dawdy’s hatred of waste and struggle with throwing things away has inspired her artwork. Her ability to repurpose materials has become a way of life and is at the epicenter of the collages she creates. Dawdy describes the process of creating collages as a most satisfying means of expression. As a major fan of collage, Dawdy described her process stating, “I collect and save paper, cut it up, and move the bits around until an image comes together. I have no idea what the piece will be, no preconceived notions, and consequently, no disappointment when what’s created hasn’t lived up to expectations.” Her approach to art mimics her approach to life as she believes expectation only invites disappointment and living with an open mind offers unlimited possibilities.
With a life-long obsession of art, Linda Shepard’s works are the culmination of her passion. She is inspired by subjects that may seem insignificant, even mundane, yet familiar and focuses on the light, patterns and color that attract her to a scene. All of her work is a reflection of life or from places she’s been. Shepard appreciates creating work with a sense of anywhere, while trying to avoid pieces that are overdone. In her own words, she tries: “to find subjects that people wouldn’t typically see and immediately think ‘that would make a great painting.’” Shepard hopes that her artwork will give viewers a peaceful place to pause from life’s daily demands.
Marilynn Thomas’ love of painting nature began with flowers and landscapes and has evolved over the last 10 years to settling on painting birds in various backgrounds, seeing how far she could push the subject. It is her belief that our time spent indoors and our attachment to electronics “has stunted our relationship with the rest of the natural world, and, ultimately, with our own selves.” Thomas seeks to move the people who view her paintings to spend more time outdoors and rekindle their love of nature, while also inspiring a need to protect it.
