Canton to Host 9th Annual Acts of Culture Week
Canton will once again focus a spotlight on arts and culture during the 9th annual Canton Acts of Culture Week. This special week, presented by the Canton Commission for Culture, Arts and Heritage, will begin on Friday, May 10 and run through Saturday, May 18, 2019, at various community locations. Some of the many goals of Canton's Acts of Culture Week include: showcasing community cultural resources and partnerships; celebrating diverse cultural offerings; raising awareness of arts accessibility; instilling an appreciation of local arts organizations; and promoting the arts and heritage in and around the Canton community. In celebration of the arts, a variety of events will be held, some of which include:
May 7-13: Summit Spring Art Exhibition will once again brighten the lobby of the Summit on the Park, located at 46000 Summit Parkway in Canton. Stop in and view over 40 works of art. These paintings, which are also available for purchase, have been created by the students and instructors of Canton Leisure Services Enrichment Watercolor I, Watercolor II and Oil & Acrylics classes. May 10: Acts of Fashion 2019, features a fashion-filled event that includes a fashion runway show and shopping experience, showcasing fashions from Metro-Detroit designers and boutiques, while also including special performances by local & national talent! A portion of the proceeds will benefit the P-CCS Educational Excellence Foundation. May 11: Party Like It’s 1999 featuring a Phase 5 Prince Tribute Concert. The Village Theater will celebrate the legacy of singer, songwriter, and legendary musician Prince with a tribute from Phase 5. Put on your best Purple and join us as we Party Like It’s 1999 and enjoy Purple Rain-inspired drinks and snacks available for purchase in the lobby. May 12 – 18: Canton Public Library presents a “Self-Guided Art Walk: Visit the library for a self-guided tour of 25 works of art and creative pieces. Ask for a map at the front desk.
May 16-19: Spotlight Players Present The Odd Couple by Neil Simon. Hilarity ensues as two very polar-opposite friends, Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar, have to figure out how to reconcile their differences as the sloppy friend tries to decide whether or not to let his fussy friend stay and drive him crazy or throw him out to retain his sanity. May 16: Canton Public Library’s Imposter Art Make And Take Workshop will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. All ages are welcome to drop-in and create some imposter art in this free make and take workshop. Visit www.cantonpl.org for details.
May 18: Canton’s Largest FREE Painting Class at the Summit on the Park will be held starting at 11:30 a.m.! All ages welcome; No experience required; Leave with a personal masterpiece created with an “April Showers Bring May Flowers” theme! May 18: Plymouth-Canton Community Schools' tenth annual K-12 Art Show will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Plymouth High School cafeteria, 8400 Beck Road, Canton 48187. Stop in to enjoy over 2,000 pieces of student artwork. Visit www.pccsk12.com for details.
