Canton To Host “Inspiring The Next Generation of Female Leaders” Youth Symposium

The B.L.O.C.K. Youth & Teen Center will host a special youth symposium for young girls in grades 3rd through 5th on Saturday, January 25, 2020, from 12 – 4 p.m. at the Summit on the Park Banquet & Conference Center, located at 46000 Summit Parkway in Canton, MI.
  
This special event is organized by Mentors of the Lead #LikeAGirl, who are former graduates of Canton’s Lead #LikeA Girl program which was develop in 2015 by The B.L.O.C.K. Youth and Teen Center to challenge young women ages 11-15 to take active roles in their personal and professional development, as well as in local decision making in their communities. 

Featured Speakers: 

Featured presentations include a keynote address by Priya Mann, WDIV Reporter, as well as closing remarks from Michigan State Senator Dayna Polehanki, District 7.

Priya Mann - WDIV Reporter 

Priya Mann is a Reporter at WDIV Local 4 News in Detroit. 
Born and raised near Toronto, Canada, she knew from an early age that she wanted to be a reporter. Priya graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications and completed a Post Graduate Diploma from Humber College in Advanced Journalism. She began her career as a volunteer reporter for Rogers Television Peel, in Mississauga. In 2008, her first job took her out West, to CFJC News in Kamloops, British Columbia, where she worked as a video journalist – shooting, writing and editing her own stories. Mann won a prestigious RTDNA award for her story ‘Remembering Afghanistan'. The feature story profiled a soldier who had recently returned to Canada after serving overseas. In 2013 started working at WDIV where she currently is a News Report and back up Anchor.

Michigan Senator Dayna Polehanki

Dayna Polehanki (Democratic Party) is a member of the Michigan State Senate, representing District 7. She assumed office on January 1, 2019. Her current term ends on January 1, 2023. Polehanki ran for election to the Michigan State Senate to represent District 7. She won in the general election on November 6, 2018. Before her election to the state legislature, Sen. Dayna Polehanki was a leader in the classroom. She is a two-time Teacher of the Year award winner and has almost 19 years of experience in the classroom. Polehanki holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Central Michigan University, a major in English and teacher certification from Alma College, and a master’s degree in teaching from Marygrove College.
