Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.

Artist Statement:
Born in the Netherlands in 1946 I grew up in Holland, Indonesia and France and moved to the United States in 1958.  I have been painting since I received my first set of oil paints when I was 12 years old.  While I spent most of my working years as a graphic artist and designer, I have always been a painter first and foremost.
I now paint full time and am doing what I really always loved to do. My ongoing travels continue to be an inspiration for much of my subject matter.  I paint primarily in oils and acrylics, preferring oils for my plein air painting and acrylics for my studio painting.  My style is heavily influenced by the French impressionists of the late 1800’s.  I have been a Canton resident since 1984.  I am a member in the American Impressionist Society and of the Michigan Plein Air Painters.
